If you happened to read my last blog post, you will see the irony in this.
My headaches started when I was 10 years old. I’ve had regular headaches up until about a year ago. I’m not totally free, but I’m working on it.
For those of you who suffer from migraines or frequent headaches, you understand how annoying they can be. A headache can affect your energy level, your concentration, mood, and (boo) your sex life!
After years of taking over the counter Tylenol, Advil, Ibuprofen, you name it…I became immune to most of those medications and they no longer worked. I’m sure my liver loves me:)
I learned to live with my headaches until college. That is when the Headaches met Anxiety! They were fast friends.
One night, while in college, some of my friends and I went to Ike’s, a favorite hangout. I was ordering a drink when all of a sudden, the bartenders words began to sound like that deep, slow, slurred and creepy sound. My vision was starting to get fuzzy and I felt extremely hot! I had to get out of there!
The next thing you know…I opened my eyes and saw all of these drunk college kids looking down at me while I lay there on the hardwood floor. I passed out! I hit my head pretty hard and felt totally confused as to what had happened.
After that night, the headaches became much worse and that is when the good old anxiety joined the party. It changed everything. (later posts on that)
My sister/mom was concerned and we scheduled an MRI. I remember that being a pretty good day because they gave me a valium before the MRI and that was the best I had felt in a while. No pain or anxiety and life was good. No wonder people get addicted to it!
Everything checked out ok and it was determined that I was just having “stress” headaches and anxiety. Great! Now what?
I tried a few medications (pharmaceutical AND my own concoctions;) over the years to help control the headaches, but nothing really seemed to help and I would feel groggy. It wasn’t worth it.
The good news is that on this journey in pursuit of health and wellness….I’ve narrowed down what makes the headaches worse, and have discovered natural remedies to eliminate them. I’ve also figured out how important gut health is! If we don’t have a healthy gut, both physical and psychological issues can “express” themselves. By this I mean in ways such as headaches, anxiety, sleep issues, blood pressure, metabolism, Mood….you name it!
The emotional stress that we carry, is a HUGE factor! We have to shed some tears and remove some fears!
So, if you are a lifetime member of the headache club and have had enough….I encourage you to seek some integrative or alternative health solutions. If you need some direction, please be in touch.Don’t accept living with the pain….
